I think you'll find that the ABS carries out a self test the first time your speed goes above say 5kph once it has been started. (ie, when you start the car and reverse out the drive) It's more noticeable in some cars than others. I remember 2 identical cars that I drove, and one was much more noticeable than the other. I was quite concerned until someone told me what it was, then it made sense... Now I like hearing/feeling it (and then no ABS warning light!) as I know that the ABS/braking system has tested itself and considers itself working. The amount you feel it through the pedal and body of the car will depend on many things, one being the clearance of the metal brake lines to the body of the car. It shouldn't actually be applying the brakes (well, you shouldn't feel the car slow down) and should last for less than a second. If its actually stopping or slowing the wheels, then get it checked out. Cheers
