As far as better program, it all depends on what you want from it.. WMP (windows media player) is basic, not allowing many controls an advanced user may want.. winamp is ok, good level of control and file manipulation, but in my experience is very system intensive Itunes, while not being the best, of the free players is my recommendation, and choice for use most of the time. A few things to think about / tips, when using itunes. 1) under Edit - Preferences - Advanced. Select the keep itunes media folder organised, and copy files to .. when adding to library this will let itunes better organise your music, so that when you want to find and copy files for a friend, it'll be better organised. Some compilations when added will be split into artist folders, not an individual album folder, thus files are split... 2) When adding new files into itunes, create a new playlist called "new" (or whatever you like), add the files into here.. If the file has missing tag information (ie, album, album artist, artist) it is a lot easier to find them in a small playlist than the entire album. (I currently have 20,000+ songs in my itunes library, it takes a lot of scrolling to find something mis-tagged). 3) with some compilations downloaded from the interweb the files have the artist and album tags right, but are not tagged as part of a compilation, and will therefore appear split. this can be done by selecting all the album, right clicking, 'get info', click options tab, and ensure 'Part of a compilation' is set to yes.
