Premium sound is standard in the Ghia

OK, the Ghia does change things a little as the head unit is high powered and the fronts already have a separate tweeter. Just doing the speakers will possibly keep you happy for a while as the high powered head unit will drive a set of quality speakers better than the standard one will. The speakers in the Ghia are a fraction better than the standard ones, (think $10 speakers in the standard setup and $12.50 speakers in the Ghia, yep an absolute joke). If you don't mind shopping over the net you can get some real bargains from some the US based car audio stores, google car audio online and have a look around, I picked up 2 sets of Cliff Designs speakers for mine and paid a little over $350 delivered from the US, retail for the same speakers here was over $1000. Lots of bargains out there so have a good look around. Good luck.

Your right the speakers are junk. Upgrading them isn’t quite a open and shut job but it isn’t to bad if you’re handy with a drill and screw driver. Assuming you have the base model turbo not the Ghia (not that the supposed ‘premium Sound’ sound system is any better mind you) Factory speakers are 5.25” and are mounted on steel pods that are riveted to the door frame, you will need to drill the rivets out and replace the factory crap with something decent. You can fit bigger speakers but you will need to make / buy speakers mounts to replace the factory ones, also note the hole in the door trim is only 5.5” so you won’t gain much by fitting 6 or 6.5” speakers unless you do some major surgery on the trim. Second problem is the head unit like most factory units it does not have any pre-outs to drive an amp so you will need to invest in a sound processor to modify the signal so an amp can be used. It’s fiddly and requires a reasonable amount of experience with auto sound systems but it can be made to sound half decent, budget for about $500 for 2 pair of reasonable 5.25” 2 way speakers, a cheap sound processor and a cheap amp to drive the speakers properly. You’ll pay around $1000 for the same work at a car audio store. Good luck

So let’s look at the TT shall we, pay attention you kids down the back there. Base car; Same engine as XR6T but with the addition of an engine oil cooler = Score 1 for the terry HD transmission (stronger than XR6T and F6) = Score 2 for the terry AWD = Score 3 for the terry TTG approx 2100 kgs (light for a 7seater SUV with all the fruit) XR approx 1800 kg’s (fat for a sedan with nothing even close to the TTG spec) = Score 4 for the terry HP potential TT and XR equal = No score 7 seat potential = Score 5 for the terry Flexibility and function, no contest!! The terry is just as fast off road, wet road, slippery road, snow road, in the mud and even on ice = Score another 6 for the terry, total 11! Street cred for the homies = Score 1 for the XR Street cred for everybody else except da homies = Score 1 for the terry, total 12 Performance XR will run 12’s with a tune and a few bolt-ons on a grippy / dry track = score 1 for the XR, total 2 TT will run 12’s with a tune and a few bolt-ons too but here’s the rub, the terry is just as fast on a dirt road, in the rain, on a rough road, around a bend, with the stick in ‘D’ and one arm out the widow giving the XR driver the bird (all on SUV tyres)………. Nuf said! Terry wins, no contest! Hey scotty! bout time you turned up.......
