Buying A Xr6 Turbo, Is There Any Problem With The Mk1's?
sir_juggsalot replied to Mitchtj's topic in XR6 Turbo
Its depends on the cash you have man. If you have the money, by all means go all out and buy the BF, you only live once But if your on a budget for around 25k you can have a nice 03 with leather, premium sound, get a cheap DBA brake and brakepad upgrade, get a BMC filter with typhoon CAI, custom tune and be running a 250rwkw beast. that's what ive done and I'm as happy as a pig in mud. Plus you can drive it around all day off boost like a normal car which saves on fuel. My car has the diff whine that you may read about, I just got used to it. It also has this annoying scrapping sound when driving at low speeds from the handbrake. But other than that I would have to say it is the best thing I have purchased in my life. Im an ex Expensive Daewoo man myself mate, and everytime I chop a VY/VX Clubby/SS I thank god I didn't buy one. -
If it helps 5 months ago I bought a mecury silver 11/03 XR6T, auto, leather, premium sound, new tyres, 12 months rego with 55k for 25k.

I was alsmost had by some highly modified baby sh*t brown 80's volvo once. I was just driving along and he baited me, and I took it. I beat in a 1km race by about half a car length, but f*ck it was quick as was catching up to me. I suppose hes chopped a few stock SS's, XR8's and XR6T's in the past...

mate I know exactly what you mean! I have found that if your waiting at the lights and one comes up behind you they wont run, but if you come up to them and creep most of them run. The only one that has known I was a turbo and was willing to run was a knob with his missus in a VY V8 Calais with a bloody loud exhaust. He was on my arse until we got a red light, then pulled up next to me creeping. It was a nice cold morning and I was in a good mood. He was thrashing his calais to try and keep up, but I just pounded his arse right in front of his missus. He didnt bother at the next set of lights lol

At what point did I say I never drive it hard? Mate I thrash the thing when Im behind the wheel. The only time shes driving it when im in the car is when ive been drinking. She may drive it most of the time but that's purely to and from work - doesnt mean its her car. I clean the thing by hand every weekend, service it myself and change the oil myself every 5k. But to answer your question, I'm after a car that goes bloody fast when im behind the wheel on weekends, but can also be driven sedately by my partner on weekdays. With my mods in a few weeks I expect to get 280-300rwkw. I don't believe I have to sacrifice reliability and driveability to have this.

thanks for the advice mate. I was under the impression that if I was to get a tune now and spend 400 that I would need to spend another 400 in a few weeks for a retune. At the time I only had a couple of hundred to spend and after experiencing the braking performance of the standard brakes it was top priority that they go. I do know a little bit about these cars but there are still gaps in my knowledge, so every little bit counts - really appreciate your help.

haha your blunt arent you? I was going to just get a custom tune now but I seriously can't see the point if its gonna have a heap of work done to it in like 8-10 weeks time. Also, it was a toss up between the tune or new rotors and pads for the front. Not being a tigharse mate, just using common sense EDIT - BTW Im from Sydney and have decided to get it done by a bloke called John from Intune.

lol haha. Nah its a genreric out of the box tune. In a few months im getting an intercooler, injectors, valve springs, pump and hf cat all at once. Ill get a custom tune then. Would it be safe to say that after all this it will go in the mid range like it does in the high range when I run 10psi?

I own an 03 auto T with F6 CAI, K&N Filter and a capa flash tune (non custom). Since I got the flash I have been running 8psi until its next service, which is when I put new plugs in. I told my gf I can now change it to 10psi, and she said no because she did'nt want more power, which I could understand because she drives it 90% of the time and in peak hour traffic. She guns it sometimes but never really pushes it past 50-75%. So tonight I pulled a shifty and put it to 10psi without telling her. I got on the drink and let her drive. She started complaining saying "what have you done to the car, why is it so slow blah blah, I told you not to change it you have ruined it etc etc your not a mechanic blah blah dont touch the car leave it alone" . I told her you need to push it a little more than usual to overtake this GTST on this straight. It was a big step for her (lol) so she put her foot down all the way and holly sh*t I dunno how fast we were going but as we overtook him it chirped into 2nd and she sh*t herself! So I'm just curious guys, do you like your power in the mid or high revs? Im changing it back to 8psi because I personally never really gun it that hard. Im getting some mods in a few months and just wondering will it be the same? I mean id like to run 10-12 psi but I dontt want to have to thrash the sh*t out of it everytime.. BTW the car is now in 8PSI lol

Im guessing he has learnt from his mistake....

damn now im worried again. I too hear a slight grinding noise when I turn off my car. But I thought this was normal? I thought it was just the turbo spinning untill it stopped?
-
sh*t that's bad news man. 3 grand far out that's alot of cash that can go to other places. Im sure you can pick up a turbo from a wrecker but I would assume they sell them complete as an xr6t engine. Just out of curiosity how long has it been since you did a change? I just picked up my car and its only been changed every 15k by the previous owner. I've always serviced my cars at 10k. You have me worried now....lol
