Hi everyone .... just wondering if any of you have had drama's with the steering collum creaking in your XR6T's? Mine feels like your driving a 20 year old car at the moment and it pisses me off no end especially since I also experience power steering pump shudder when turning to the left at slow (engine idling) speeds as well!!!!!!!!!

My dealer said there's to be a recall to address the steering collum creak by way of replacing the whole steering collum! The power steering shudder problem when turning left at slow speeds (engine idling) has still to be retified so my dealer tells me :gooff:

Maybe FORDTECH can verify the issues and ways of fixing the power steering drama's everyone's experiencing ... my dealers replaced the power steering pump and rack BUT IT STILL SHUDDERS WHEN TURNING LEFT!!!!!!!! :gooff:

Maybe we should start a poll on this .... let me know your thoughts

My ford dealer has told me to do slow figure 8's about 15 - 20 times to try and stop the steering shudder ... yet to try it .. but it annoys me!!

Hi all, thanks for your reply's .... the rack has been tightened many times and even been replaced altogether but to no avail XR Phantom. The creaking still persists in the steering column and the shuddering remains in the power steering pump when turning to the left at slow speeds eg(engine idling).

Any further idea's ... please dont tell me to tighten the rack :finger:

Hey Guys!

I have had my creaking fixed a couple of times and it is not the same thing. It is pissing me off at the moment. Does your car:

- take extra effort to turn especially when you start to turn it?

- steering feel wooden when moving?

I don't think I really have steering shudder (just had the brakes machined)

Mine does, I'm also gonna get a suspension check and wheel alignment 2 cause something just ain't right.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Cheers

p.s. put your windows down and turn the wheel to full lock on both sides does everyones make a psshhht noise when ya get there? Dont ask me to say that again.

Instead of doing slow 8's maybe you can do smoking 8's and have lots more fun...And with all the noise you won't notice the steering creaking anymore

Your dealer is sort of telling the truth(for a change). The concern is that the steering column's have been assembled with what Ford call a sub standard bearing fitted to the base of the column.Over time the bearing begins to litterally chew itself apart.Replacing the whole steering column is the only way to rectify this problem.I'm pretty sure that they arent going to recall any vehicles at this stage but they are releasing a TSB to cover this issue. Before anybody starts flaming me,I only supply the information so dont blame me.

As for the steering shudder, seems strange that it only happens when you turn left. Can honestly say that I haven't come accross that. They either shudder all the time either way or they don't shudder at all.One thing you could try is to raise the vehicle so both front wheels are off the ground. Then turn the steering from lock to lock 40 times and see if that makes a difference. One thing to remember when doing this is to make sure the reservoir cap is "On",and dont undo it after this procedure either.

Sorry I couldn't be more help

Hey IM2QIK,

I have the same problem... only when turning left or straightening the steering wheel from a left turn. I've tried these "figure 8's" but it don't work. I also had my steering rack replaced and it was ok for about 2 days.

The problem is still yet to be fixed.

Ive noticed a new noise - a clicking from my steering wheel area when I do (usually low speed) tight turns, say when moving aorund a car park area at a shopping center.

Ive heard it before in the past in other (different) cars of various make.

My T never made this noise until recently.

Any one heard similar?

An example: in a multi-level car park, and have to turn around to go up the next level. Turn the wheel (eventually to near full lock) and click, click, click it happens steadily maybe 3 or so times.

Either way from memory.

Not sure if it signifies something is wrong. I have a vague feeling that my steering may be feeling a little different (a bit more sluggish) but not really sure as it may have got that way over time.

15k service coming up so having it looked into....but was wondering if anyone had come across similar. My steering wheel area used to be silent no matter what!
