Hi all. I have just picked up a 2004 xr6t. Auto (of course) with 78000km on it. The price was ultra cheap via tender so that's the good part.

Problems however is that it runs like a Lada.

Noteable issues that may ring bells for anyone with a little more experience....

1. Idle is rough at best with a noticeable missfire intermittently. Makes no difference if hot or cold.

2. When driving cold (I.e. first 5 minutes) on light throttle there is a huge surge going on. We are talking consistent light throttle 50-60kph with an on and off sort of surge. Seems to vanish when hot.

3. Wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding. I drove a low km example a few weeks ago that was unmodified and it went like a scalded cat. This purple disgrace to the breed however would struggle to keep up with a standard falcon. It comes on boost....a noticeable kick when it does but just feels lethargic all the way through the range.

Exhaust is standard, cat has been inspected and is in good condition. Only visible mod is a bloody great K&N pod filter which will be departing as soon as I can get my hands on a factory air box.

Basically I have no intention to modify this car and really only bought it with the intention of having a relatively quick road car for long trips so whatever is needed to recitify current issues need not make allowances for future developments.

The only other issue it seems to have is serious brake shudder at open road speeds though from what little I have read it seems replacing rotors will be the answer to that one. Any tips on best rotors without spending the earth also appreciated.

Cheers in advance for the help.

Lose the pod filter then take it to ford and get them to put a scan tool on it and get the list of faults. Will help to get in the right direction of fixing whatever needs done

also check all ya pipe work - my car was still boosting real well but was dead as - turns out I had a boost leak sealed it up and that solved the problem - now it goes hard again

There is no evidence of it from what I can see. It was tendered due to a company going into recievership, not insurance tender.

give the throttle body a clean , boost solenoid maintenance , check all your turbo/manifold bolts are tight, new plugs and a thorough service. See how you go then.

As for rotors , check out the brake shudder thread. But DBA 4000 slotted rotors are a very worthwhile upgrade.

Any of the sites advertisers will be able to sort these issues. Why not get a custom tune to boot

btw

Ok, update.

In the little more than half hour since posting I printed the boost solenoid maintenance page and did that.

Hold crap :spit: Power shortage gone! THAT is why I bought the car! Comes on way earlier and hard. Only gave it a brief squirt but the 80-120 range is insane!

The surge remains when cold and doesnt appear to have changed.

The rough idle is still evident when cold but (unless it is just my adrenaline fuelled imagination) seems a little better once it is hot.

Still plenty to do by the sound of it but clearly the boost solenoid was holding the poor thing back big time.
