illusionzzz Member 180 Member For: 19y 14d Posted 28/03/07 02:25 AM Share Posted 28/03/07 02:25 AM Hi Guys, I need some help and opinions regarding strengthening and rebuilding the 4speed auto in my BA XR6T. I was pushing around 290rwkw with about 50,000ks on the clock and have managed to push a rod and half a piston out of the sump. So while she’s off the road and going to be rebuilt with all the serious gear inside her I figure it’s as good a time as any to help the gearbox out a little.I know Melbourne is the place to be but I’m pretty keen on getting the work done in Sydney, so that if I have any recurring issues it’s not too far to travel. So I’ve pretty much rang two different places and have got a couple of different opinions and prices. All were really helpful and had great customer service, so I’m more about comparing bang for buck with what they actually offer.I told all of them that I would hopefully be pushing upwards of 350rwkws and need a stally of about 2800. The first place I’ve spoke to I’ve heard a bit about through the forums and was recommended to by Autotech:Dominello TransmissionsSaid that I would be looking at about 4500 – 5000 drive in, drive out. This included changing the planetary gears to the XR8 (I thought they were the same?) and I assume everything else new and or modified with a 2800 stally. The box also had a years warranty. ProtransSaid that if I was planning on making more than 400rwkws that they wouldn’t rebuild the box as they are really weak, in particular second gear. They believe there’s not much point in changing the planetary gears because a.) it’s expensive and b.) I probably won’t break the stock ones. So they would put high energy bands, modify the valve body and clutches and have a stally for about the $2000 -$3000 mark. So what do you guys think? What actually do the guys in Melbourne do to the boxes? Has anyone done business with these companies? How was the work/service? Any advice would be great. Guest Guests Posted 28/03/07 03:24 AM Share Posted 28/03/07 03:24 AM Sorry it's a bit off topic mate but how long did you have 290rwkw before she went bang and what year's your car? I've heard a few horror stories lately and am contemplating winding the power back on mine til I strengthen the bottom end.Cheers

We had found oil in the pvc valve which then lead to me getting a compression test, Cylinder 1 was losing compression, but looking under the car looks like its one of the back pistons that has come out the sump. I would have rebuilt it as soon as I found out but couldn't afford it and needed the car on the road... Lasted about 12months like that...

He does the transmission's for CV Performance, so the two companies go hand in hand when it come's to heavily modifying your auto XR6 Turbo. The auto in my car now is possibly the strongest transmission currently in an XR6 Turbo to date, so im sure he'll be able to handle whatever you throw at him. Spiro uppd the line pressures on the auto when he did my tune and had the boost coming in fairly late to help save the standard box. A lot of other tuners have the boost coming on in bucketloads real low - this is a sure way to wreck a std box.Anyway, mine lasted about 6 months like that till it was starting to flare. I had it rebuilt at Dominello's for $3,500 but I had CV racing remove and install the box so that's part of the reason why the price is a bit lower than what you were quoted. I already had the 2800 stall and Tony Dominello cleaned that out and went over it to get it perfect.Everything in the box has been replaced, bands, planetaries etc etc with all the best stuff. I have been running it since November like that with no problems whatsoever. The thing changes gears way waaaay quicker and harder than a stockie. I can highly recommend Tony's work if you can afford him.I'm about to put my Nizpro bottom end into the car and tune her up to 400 ~ 450 rwkw and see how long the box hangs on with that. Tony was certainly confident that it would hold up.Go for it and good luck. You could always consider a C9 ? C3? gearbox conversion for similar/less money if you want a stronger box and can handle 3 gears. icemybutt on this forum had his done over at MRT if you want any info. illusionzzz Member 180 Member For: 19y 14d Posted 28/03/07 09:28 AM Author Share Posted 28/03/07 09:28 AM Thanks for the advice guys! What a shame its a driver and I really want to keep that fourth gear hahahaBoth Protrans and Dominello sound and seem more than competent! I'm just trying to grasp the huge price difference? So if anyone can shed light on that and the planetaries? (maybe that's the reason for the massive price difference?) What kind of times are you guys running INFLYT and exahsix??? Although that time was run by the previous owner in Melbourne. I don't know if it's the same auto or not though - Inflyt will be right along to let you know.Mine runs a 12.5 but that's on 20" Nankangs which went up in smoke on the line at anything above 2000 rpm. Terrible 60' time. I'd say with M/T ET streets it would be some sort of 11. Will find out one day....Icemybutt with his hi stall and C9 Auto ran an 11.
illusionzzz Member 180 Member For: 19y 14d Posted 28/03/07 12:20 PM Author Share Posted 28/03/07 12:20 PM still quick nonetheless exahsix!!!! would be interesting to put some good rubber on it...so whens the nizpro bottem end going in? nizpro doing the work?are you based in vic? what made you go the nizpro bottom end? I'm really unsure as to what to do with my engine situation. I originally was going to get autotech to build one from scratch using whatever we can from my motor and sourcing a new block etc etc. But I'm wondering if maybe a short motor from either Atomic or Nizpro may be a better option... Anyone else been in this situation?
