XR6T Foaming at the mouth !

Sunday 5.30 - Gateway Arterial en route to airport. "Thumo" steam from under bonnet. Pulled over immediately.

Small water pipe hose on right front of engine (looking in over rad.) that joins the two sections of metal pipe that takes water to turbo had burst. Sent water and pink gunk allover pax side engine bay.

Ford assist got a tow to nearst servo where they transfer you to RACQ. He replaces pipe - topes up with plain water and says "drive home go to Ford tommorrow." We query the pink gunk (the Rad header tank is full of it !) He says its okay "and to operate heater on the way home.!" (big mistake as heater is probably now full of gunk.)

Call BBF Monday, explain status - they say okay so drive the 20 ks to Mt Gravatt.

Sure enough it is tranny fluid in coolant - but also tranny is full of water / gunk as well. Tranny cooling pipe in radiator has split. When tranny in running, oil pressure forces oil in to radiator coolant. When you shut down residual water pressure forces water / gunk in to tranny.

Off road for a week. BBF found a loaner for us this arvo. They say will rebuild tranny plus new radiator and flush engine.

My concern is that Tranny fluid in coolant has aleady caused the smallest hose to blow. What about the rest of rubber in system (including heater side.) Also how do you ever get this real thick greasy "sticky" gunk out of the engine block, heater unit, thermostat / temp senders / turbo casing etc etc etc.

Any thoughts on minimum that should be done. (I have my first long distance trip to Sydney coming up in three weeks time - what is the odds some tranny contaminated rubber will let go en route ! BBF are having a think about what to look at downstream from the rad and tranny.

Be warned BBF have seen this problem before. We had no warning - no overheat of engine - ever - tranny was a bit hesitant on shift about three days before - would change up then up /down 2-3 times before settling down.

Any thoughts on what else the contaminated fluids might stuff up would be appreciated.

Update of XR6T Foaming at the mouth.

Well it will be 3 weeks Monday -still no fix for the beast.

The boys at BBF Mt. G have worked their guts out within Ford constraints but no go.

Problem was the transmission oil cooling section in the radiator split internally. That let tranny oil in to water and water in to tranny.

A mix you never want to see. thick pink gunk "everywhere."

They agreed new radiator / new hoses throughout (including heater), new header tank - but could only "strip clean & repair tranny" .

After 10 days (half the time waiting for "never use" parts) and midday deadline for me to leave for Sydney - dropped car off hoist for test - rebuilt tranny sh*t itself before they even got out on to the street. Had to fly to Sydney as loaner car "not Insured for Interstate travel" (their quote - not mine) - not impressed.

Today got back -they repaired tranny again - new pump fitted - again it sh*t itself on start up. They stripped it a third time - this time on test it shudders and slips at 4,000 rpm.

Have demanded a new tranny but " tranny not made by Ford - the maker says get stuffed - it was the split radiator that stuffed it. Now have to convince ford that they should get a tranny and give it to me.

Still trying to convince them that this gunk is going to be through the block and thru turbo cooling jacket and it wont come out with just a chemical flush.

I think the poor guys at BBF are meat in sandwich between me and Ford. Anyone else having similar problems with cross contamination between coolant and tranny

fluid ?

I am not convinced you would ever clear the gunk out of block with "just a flush" let alone out of the turbo cooling water jacket.

Any thoughts on that ?

Bogeyman.

You poor bas*ard I dont think I would be able to make the same post that you just have without a lot of emotion and countless expletives.

At least it seems that the dealer is trying their hardest, but I wouldnt be comfortable with a flush after seeing what the old tranny fluid and coolant combo looks like. It would have to be a seriously intense and vigorous flush to be effective.

And the whole different manufacturer story sounds like absolute tripe, and makes no logical sense no matter how you look at it. The warranty is applicable to the entire vehicle, not its individual components unconnectedly.

All the best with getting it sorted though, and hopefully Ford will come to the party and replace what obviously needs to be.

Have you spoken to 13FORD ?

You should deal with Ford directly, while your dealer may be doing a good job, you may need to convey your disgust with FoMoCo directly.

The should pay for a new tranny, and gurantee your cooling system is not rooted from the ATF. The either should replace everything or stand behind their claims.

Good luck....you will need it

I'll be watching the papers for a BA Falcon recall for radiators on automatic cars built between x month and y month of whatever year.Or will they pretend its not happening like overboost?

Interesting thing.... I complained about a problem with my tranny a while back - when the car was like 5 months old. When I got back to pick up the car from the dealer, I spotted the dealer job sheet. They had noted on top of the sheet in pen - as though written while on the phone, that my car had a 5yr warranty on it (I paid for a 5yr/160,000k wty when I bought it).

It got me thinking that FoMoCo's first thoughts are... "gee, how can we do this so the thing lasts JUST until warranty runs out...so we can save a few bucks on replacing it...".
