Intake temps

Ok guys I have installed a intake temperature sensor at the throttle body. After installing it, it read 17c. After giving the car a bit I finally managed to get it up to 40c. This was after driving in 1st at good revs for awhile. While the car was cooling down the temp started building and when I left the car was at 52c.

How much difference does the intake temps make on the cars performance.

At what temp would there start being a difference.

Has nayone else installed one of these and if so what have you learnt.

I havn't mounted it properly yet, not sure where to put it.

I was advised to put a small hole in the flange and force the probe in (waiting for comments). I did this and its a nice tight fit (more comments).

I need to mount the unit and then do a bit of research on the different temps.

Hi

As a general rule - a reduction of 5.5oC = 1% improvement in kws. So if you install some sort of cooling system that can reduce the intake temp by say 10-11oC you will see a 2% improvement - ie only a handful of kws.

Where did you buy and how did you install the sensor? :nod:

Here is the link. I haven't mounted it properly yet. The sensor is great and gives very acurate readings I inserted the probe just before the throttle body. When driving around the temps are mid 20c's. When I boot it, it climbs well over 40c. I haven't done a lot of experimenting yet and haven't tried my 12psi map at all. It's very informative.

I'll take some photo's latter, I have the probe in the last black flange before the air goes in the engine. I put it here as I thought it would give the best reading for the intake air temp. If I was to put it in the intercooler it would still have to travel from the intercooler to the engine and the temp may change.

I guess you can move it around once you've got it mounted

would idealy be best to put a pre & post intercooler guages in to record the effectivness of the intercooler.

Geea. Wouldnt the spikes in temp when you boot it be because the air is compressed, so when the car is being driven sedatley the intake air temps would be lower due to the turbo not pushing as much boosted air into the motor, and temps being higher when the turbo is on boost due to compressed air gaining temp dur to friction.

this is my opinon, and is in no way an educated one, just what I think.
