Guest Isher Guests Posted 23/09/03 07:09 AM Share Posted 23/09/03 07:09 AM Hi,I was thinking a while back about a mod that I would like to see for the ICC and was wondering if someone out there with more knowledge than I could comment ion its feasibility. As I understand it, the colour ICC is used by the GPS navigation system to display maps. These maps are held on a DVD, read by the GPS Nav DVD reader. Thus I am assuming that the ICC has some capability to accept a TV picture input (DVD output, eg, composite video or RGB) to display the maps. If this is the case, surely there must be some way we could jerry-rig a cheap TV receiver, output it to the ICC GPS Nav input and get TV on the ICC? (Albeit at a reduced resolution or poor picture quality). I suspect that the ICC was probably not designed to handle very high resolutions anyway, judging from the pixilated graphics used at the moment.Which raises a second question: Is it possible to swap/burn/Program a ROM in the ICC to change its look/colour?Anyone out there with a better understanding of the ICC and TV electronics willing to shed any light on the possibility of these ideas? Am I crazy for thinking this? Is it possible?Regards,Isher

I seem to remember quite a while back some detailed technical discussion about this and the conclusion was that it couldn't be achieved.

As far as I can tell from just reading about the options and how they get integrated... The car must have the colour screen in it for the ICC + Nav combo...Thhat confirms the screens are common. The screen is probably a 'common' TFT size and as such there's probably a common driver interface available. The 'trick' would probably be in linking it to an external source and switching between them. That's probably embeded int eh control board mounted directly tot eh back of the ICC screen (well it's what I would do for ease of assembly on the production line)...I guess it will probably be learnt in good time as people start getting into wrecks and can cut apart units for 'testing'.... Guest P'cisT Guests Posted 23/09/03 01:42 PM Share Posted 23/09/03 01:42 PM There is already a aftermarket DVD player and Sat Nav available for use with the Premium Sound colour screen. However ,it was about $5k.

I do know that the premium screen switches input by messages on the CAN bus, which apparently can be accessed at the fuse panel. The trick will be to generate a CAN message to switch the screen to another input source (the one used by sat nav) and back. CAN is a not a simple interface, (multi-drop, with several car systems on it) so interfacing would need to be done with a dedicated CAN chip and a low end micro of some sort to generate messages. Then there is the video signal interface, which I've heard is _not_ composite but some R/G/B format with sync on Green.I wanted to add a PC under one of the seats and display to the ICC- using an infra-red remote to control an MP3 player - that plan is on hold till someone else makes a breakthrough or I get enthused and start pulling the dash out to play with it. (not too likely as I like driving it too much )LaterBK

Peronsally I could care less about DVD, navigation would be cool - but when I can add it to my PPC device for about $900 I gotta wonder about the value of integration
