New Xr6t - A-pillar Chasis Rattle

For the first 2000Ks and four weeks of having my XR6T sedan, the thing has been perfect. Not any more.

On the way home from work a couple of nights ago I noticed a distinct, annoying rattle coming from somewhere on the left front quarter of the car. From the driving position, the noise is coming from somewhere directlly in line with but beyond the glove compartment. It sounds like a big metal rod being rattled between two heavy metal plates and is loud enough to be heard over the top of a CD being played at moderate volume.

So off to the dealer I went at 7:30am the next morning.

One of their mechanics took a test drive with me. He was pretty sure it was something he'd seen (heard) before. He said that there have been cases where there is a slight flexing at the three-way join of the front left A-pillar and two sections of the chasis which has been known to cause either rattling or squeeking noises.

I don't know. It sounds more like a metal rod as I've described above but the mechanic was very certain about it.

Either way, they are now wanting to have my car for two days at the 3000k service so they can send it to the panel shop where, he tells me, they will bend / separate the edges of this three-way join by a "few thou"

Arrrrgggghhhhhhhh.

Any other BA owners with this issue??

I get a vibrating noise coming from around the area you describe, but only when it is subjeced to some vibration itself, such as a big truck driving by, or some loud thumping music from the sub-woofer.

I put this down to the way cars are slapped together these days, but I will mention it at the first service.

I remember reading in a US car mag years ago .....a bloke had a top of the range Jeep and it had an anoying rattle. Kept taking it back, change this tighten that, noise still there, getting mader and mader.

A a year or so later his wife gets T-boned at an intersection and whilest the car is being repaired, they find a tin with a bolt on a string in it, welded inside the sill, with a note that read...

"You're the rich SOB you find the rattle"
