Guest Raptor660 Guests Posted 20/02/03 01:59 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 01:59 AM I just spoke to a guy Mike from Rotomaster who are a Victorian Garrett Turbocharger distributor wanting to find a part number for the Ford XR6 Turbo (supposedly a GT40 size). He told me that the turbo is actually a smaller GT35 not a GT40 as portrayed on the web. I have a 4.5 ltr GU Nissan patrol and want to fit a garrett turbo to it. The specs on the GT40 are perfect for my application but if he is correct then the flowrates are lower on the GT35.We need to know for sure what the details are. The GT40 has different bolt spacing (compared to the GT35) on the turbine exhaust flange that bolts to the exhaust manifold. Can someone pull the turbo off and measure it. The GT40 has 4 bolts with 3.5"x2.75" spacing. The GT35 has 4 bolts with 3.25"x2.75" spacing. The Garrett catalog can be downloaded from www.turbobygarrett.com which is where I got my info from. Sorry mate, left my spanner in my other pants at home....don't think there will be too many people wanting to pull the turbos off their cars. Try calling Rob Herrod @ Herrod Automotive 03 94645100, he may be able to help.
Guest JESMAL Guests Posted 20/02/03 02:27 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 02:27 AM But...but...Ford said it is a GT40......Damn....this smells like a conspiracy.....go check em out boys!
Guest esky Guests Posted 20/02/03 02:34 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 02:34 AM Dude, There is more than just one GT40 produced. Asia Motors had the GT4082 produced, one revision only. Scania had the GT4082S, GT4080 and GT4082SN produced. Detroit Diesel had the GT4088DEJN made and the list goes on.There are numerous GT40s with different compressor and turbine diameters and trim specs. The GT40 on the Falcon has been built in conjunction with FPV, and therefore technical data on it is kept hiden under David Flints pillow . The Garrett cartridge part number is 723157-0001. I would have thought the flow properties would have been more important than what badge it wears, GT35, GT40, GTWFC....esky
Guest Raptor660 Guests Posted 20/02/03 04:01 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 04:01 AM Actually on 2nd thought. Its probably a far better idea to pull the turbine housing off and measure the turbine wheel dia. The GT40 has a 77mm dia. turbine wheel whereas the GT35 has a 68mm turbine wheel dia. The flange bolt spacing is not a reliable indicator by itselfThe Garrett catalog lists the GT35 and GT40 turbo's as free floating. Free floating means that they don’t have internal wastegates. Obviously the version ford use is internally wastegated, but Garrett might have done a special for OEM use.
Guest Raptor660 Guests Posted 20/02/03 04:34 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 04:34 AM I agree with you about a myriad of versions being available but to say that the name badge means nothing is incorrect. The fact is, the bigger the turbine wheel the bigger the turbo and the label.Ie a tiny little GT12 has a turbine wheel dia of 35.5mm and a GT42 has a turbine wheel dia of 82mm. The bigger the designation the bigger the turbo.!!

The bigger the designation the bigger the turbo.!! If the flow characteristics of a particular turbo don't meet your needs, then turbo size is irrelevant. Otherwise we'd all be using truck turbos. Is your point that Ford lied to us about the turbo size, ie it's really a GT35 not GT40, because your mate told you so?Falchoon can you pass me that spanner so I can slap raptor660 around. Guest Raptor660 Guests Posted 20/02/03 07:03 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 07:03 AM My point is that if the turbo is in fact a GT35 size (as determined by the dia of the turbine wheel being around 68mm compared to 77mm) then the maximum potential for power output is reduced. A GT35 size turbo can only flow enough for about 500hp regardless of what trim compressor is used or housing A/R ratio.A GT40 sized turbo can potentially flow 600-650 hp with suitable compressor wheels and housings. Ray hall turbocharging are also trying to establish whether it's a 40 size or not.!! If you put an aftermarket Autronic ECU, and add bigger exhaust, intercooler, and lower comp to 7.5:1 and fix cam timing (you dont need VCT if you just want raw horespower) then you will need a minimum size of GT40 turbo upwards. A GT35 simply can't flow enough under these conditions with high boost and bulk horsepower. Now falcoohn wheres that spanner.
Guest Bathrone Guests Posted 20/02/03 07:24 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 07:24 AM Why turn it into a low compression off boost slug? I'd leave the static CR alone. And I think the days of aftermarket ECUs for anything other than dedicated motorsport is gone. There is an interesting and detailed article on this over at autospeed.comGuys, clearly we need to lobby FPV like the wise guy has said, silly Ford need to start supporting its enthusiasts more with real tech info! Guest ladieslookout Guests Posted 20/02/03 08:02 AM Share Posted 20/02/03 08:02 AM Bud I dont think Ford Australia especially FPV r going to say they use GT40 when it may be a GT35. It just is a load of B.S.
