I know we have talked about oil elsewhere, but since a certian moderator with a very frustrating avitar (takes clothes off puts clothes on takes clothes off...) seems to get upset with thread hijackers I thought I should start afresh. ;)

I have noticed that my Ford dealer is putting catrol Magnatec oil in my T.

I am worried about this as in years gone by dads old xD (found when head gasket replaced) and the wifes old KC Laser (found when adjusting tappets) both had all the valve gear (rocker arms etc) and under the rocker cover etc at the top of the engine totally coated with thick crusty layers of a 'black snot' type subtance.

Sorry but that is the best description I can come up with, it was a flakey Black residue just like dried up snot in an old hanky.

Both cars had been run on Castrol GTX and I assumed that is what caused the residue. As I ran my cars on Course plus, valvoline or Penrite and have not seen the Black Snot since.

Anybody know what I am on about? :ta:

Err.....No!

I use Castrol GTX3 in my T, yes that's right I actually stick to the recommended grade, and I haven't noticed any black bits of dried snot in the oil, but it's changed in between services anyway so maybe there's no time for these to develop.

Do you know whether your dealer actually puts Magnatec in your car? The reason I ask is because on my service invoice it lists Magnatec and when I asked why they put the wrong grade oil in my car they said the correct oil had been put in the car (GTX3) but theinvoicing program they use will only accommodate one oil type so every invoice is printed out showing Magnatec as the used oil, bit limited don't you think?

Have a great new year everyone!

Until now I've assumed they (my dealer) uses magnatex, but I'll be checking. I change it myself in between 15,000 intervals & use ye ole Z9 & magnatex.

GTX has caused this for a long time and has been known to cause a lot of damage as for the new castrol oils I am not sure if they cause any sluge biuld up.

I did a fair bit of research into Ford's 'oil of choice' before I had my first service as I did not want any old crap put into my T. I rang quite a few Ford Service places around Sydney and each of them gave me a different answer when asked what oil they used. I also received a hell of a lot of conflicting advice about using full or semi synthetic and even one that said never to use a synthetic oil in a T (I disregarded that one)!

I found that the majority of the Ford service centres that use Castrol use FMX which is a trade oil (ie, designed by Castrol for the garages and it only comes in 205 lt drums). It is a 15W-40 semi synthetic oil at I assume is very similar to Magnatec. BTW, a drum of FMX will set you back around $800 if you are really keen.

I ended up using the Magnatec during the first 15,000 km and then switched to Castrol R 0W-40 which is a fully synthetic oil and runs at about $70 for 5 lt if you buy it direct from the Castrol distributors.

IMO, don't skimp on oil and change it more often than 15,000 km.... unless of course you are the sort of person that wears their underwear for four days..... forwards, backwards, insideout forwards, insideout backwards.

You are spot on there mate, except it's actually like GTX3 not Magnatec, the FMX is semi synthetic whereas GTX3 is non synthetic, FMX and GTX3 are both 15W-40, I've spoken to the Castrol rep about this very subject.
